The natural trails and lowland dry forest fringes surrounding Labuan Bajo harbor an incredible variety of Wallacean herpetofauna. During our 2-3 hour night walks, we search along natural creek beds, dense foliage, and limestone crevices for pit vipers, endemic geckos, tree frogs, and elusive colubrids.
Key target species in this region include the stunning White-lipped Island Pit Viper (Trimeresurus insularis) in both green and blue-tinted variations, Tokay geckos (Gekko gecko), bent-toed geckos (Cyrtodactylus sp.), and a myriad of nocturnal amphibians active after twilight.
SNAKE PALACE (ISTANA ULAR)
Karst Cave Ecosystem & Surrounding Forest Habitats
Located outside Labuan Bajo town in West Manggarai, the Snake Palace Cave (Istana Ular) is a world-renowned natural sanctuary and one of Indonesia's most captivating herpetological frontiers. The cave system is inhabited by a dense community of non-aggressive cave-dwelling pythons, bats, and specialized subterranean fauna.
During this 5-6 hour half-day trip, Kak Beny leads guests across the cave surroundings and forest approaches, identifying snake tracks, basking perches, and karst microhabitats.
